Apple 2026 MacBook Neo 13-inch Review

Rating: 4.2 / 5

Apple has done something genuinely interesting with the MacBook Neo — it’s a brand-new product line that didn’t exist before 2026, slotting in below the MacBook Air to bring the Mac experience to more people at a more accessible price. Starting at $599, this is the most affordable Mac laptop Apple has ever made, and yet it doesn’t feel cheap. Here’s the full breakdown.

Design & Build

MacBook Neo features a durable aluminum enclosure available in four gorgeous colors — Blush, Indigo, Silver, and a fresh new Citrus Apple — each with a color-coordinated keyboard, making it the most colorful MacBook lineup ever. Apple It’s compact, light, and feels premium in hand despite its entry-level positioning. The recycled aluminum construction is a nice sustainability touch too — it reaches 60 percent recycled content by weight, the most ever in any Apple product. Apple

Display

The 13-inch Liquid Retina display features a 2408-by-1506 resolution, up to 500 nits of brightness, and support for a billion colors, delivering vivid images and crisp text. Amazon It’s not ProMotion, and it doesn’t go as bright as the MacBook Pro, but for everyday use — browsing, studying, streaming — it looks genuinely excellent.

Performance

The star of the show is the A18 Pro chip, which Apple brought over from the iPhone 16 Pro. MacBook Neo with A18 Pro is up to 50 percent faster for everyday tasks than the bestselling PC with the latest shipping Intel Core Ultra 5, and up to 3x faster for on-device AI workloads. Apple The chip features a 6-core CPU, 5-core GPU, and a 16-core Neural Engine, making it a genuinely capable machine for students, light creatives, and everyday professionals. Don’t expect it to rival the M4 MacBook Pro for heavy video editing or 3D rendering, but for its target audience it absolutely flies.

Apple Intelligence & AI

This is where the MacBook Neo shines in a new way. At the heart of MacBook Neo is A18 Pro, enabling users to power through things they do every day, like browsing the web, creating documents, streaming content, editing photos, and taking advantage of AI. Apple Apple Intelligence features like summarizing notes, rewriting text, and the Clean Up tool in Photos all run entirely on-device — fast, private, and no subscription required.

Battery Life

MacBook Neo offers up to 16 hours of battery life, making it equipped to go the distance for everyday users and students — from early-morning classes to late-night study sessions. Amazon Real-world use will land closer to 12–13 hours with mixed workloads, but that’s still comfortably all-day.

Camera, Audio & Connectivity

The 1080p FaceTime HD camera gives you a clear and crisp appearance on video calls, while dual side-firing speakers deliver immersive sound with Spatial Audio support and Dolby Atmos. Apple The dual-mic array does an excellent job isolating voices during calls.

On connectivity, two USB-C ports and a headphone jack let you connect a variety of accessories, transfer data, and charge MacBook Neo. Apple Two ports is limiting for power users, but expected at this price point.

Value

At $599 (256GB) and $699 (512GB), the MacBook Neo undercuts the MacBook Air by a meaningful margin while still delivering Apple silicon performance, a great display, and Apple Intelligence. It’s an obvious choice for students, first-time Mac buyers, and anyone who doesn’t need the extra horsepower of the Air or Pro.

Who should buy it: Students, everyday users, first-time Mac buyers, and anyone upgrading from an old Windows laptop on a budget.

Who should skip it: Power users, video editors, developers, or anyone who needs more than 2 USB-C ports or more than 8GB of RAM.

The MacBook Neo is a smart, well-executed product that makes the Mac more accessible without embarrassing itself. If $599 gets you this, Apple’s entry-level game has never been stronger.
