Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K Plus (Newest Model) Review: Smart Streaming Made Simpler
Rating: 4 / 5
Amazon’s Fire TV Stick lineup has always punched above its weight for the price, and the newest Fire TV Stick 4K Plus continues that tradition — now with an AI-powered search overhaul that makes finding something to watch genuinely faster and smarter. It’s not perfect, but at this price point, it’s one of the best streaming sticks you can buy.
Design & Setup
There’s nothing flashy about the hardware itself — it’s the same compact dongle that plugs directly into your TV’s HDMI port and disappears behind the screen. It’s compact enough to disappear behind the screen, powered directly by USB, and designed to stay out of sight once it’s plugged in. Kotaku Setup takes only a few minutes: plug it in, connect to Wi-Fi, log into your Amazon account, and you’re streaming. It’s genuinely one of the easiest devices to get up and running.
The included Alexa Voice Remote handles TV power and volume, has preset shortcut buttons for popular apps like Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+, and Peacock, and doubles as a smart home controller. One small note: the device still uses a Micro-USB power cable rather than USB-C, which feels slightly behind the times — but in practice it’s unlikely to affect most users.
Picture & Audio Quality
The Fire TV Stick 4K Plus delivers 4K Ultra HD playback with Dolby Vision, HDR10+, and Dolby Atmos support for a more immersive viewing experience. Trusted Reviews On a compatible 4K TV, the results are genuinely impressive — colors pop, contrast is strong, and the audio passthrough to a soundbar or receiver is clean and full. In terms of picture performance and navigation, there are no complaints — the stick and Fire OS are responsive and run as intended. Tom’s Guide
The Star Feature: AI-Powered Search
This is where the 4K Plus earns its “newest model” badge. Amazon’s latest Fire TV Stick leans heavily into AI-powered search, which means you can speak naturally into the Alexa Voice Remote and get far more precise results instead of scrolling through endless rows of apps. Ask for “action movies from the 2000s” or “comedies with quick episodes” and it does the sorting for you. Kotaku You can search by actor, plot description, mood, or even an iconic quote from a movie — a legitimately useful upgrade over keyword-only search.
Alexa+ is included free with Prime membership Amazon, which for Amazon subscribers makes the value proposition especially strong. Non-Prime users pay $19.99/month for Alexa+ separately, so the math changes somewhat depending on your situation.
Performance & Connectivity
The 4K Plus now supports Wi-Fi 6 for smooth 4K streaming with less interference from other connected devices Amazon — a meaningful upgrade in busier households where multiple devices compete for bandwidth. The quad-core 1.7GHz processor keeps app loading fast and navigation fluid, though it’s worth noting the 4K Max offers a faster chip and Wi-Fi 6E if you want the absolute top tier.
Storage comes in at 8GB, which is adequate for most users but can fill up if you’re a heavy app downloader. The 8GB of storage may eventually force you to delete apps in order to download new ones CNN — a limitation addressed only by stepping up to the 4K Max’s 16GB.
Content & Gaming
The Fire TV Stick 4K Plus gives you access to over 1.8 million movies and TV episodes, plus over 400,000 free titles from ad-supported services like Tubi, Pluto TV, and Fire TV Channels. Amazon All the major platforms are here — Netflix, Max, Disney+, Apple TV+, Peacock, and more.
For gamers, you can stream Xbox games including Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, Hogwarts Legacy, and hundreds more via Xbox Game Pass cloud gaming — no console required. Amazon An Xbox Game Pass subscription and compatible controller are needed separately, but it’s a compelling bonus for the price.
A Few Caveats
The Fire TV home screen is noticeably ad-heavy. Ads appear in the top carousel, the default screensaver, and now in Prime Video content as well — and while ads are part of the reason Amazon can sell Fire Sticks at such low prices, they’re hard to ignore on the home screen. Yahoo! App management also remains a bit clunky — there’s no obvious way to add, move, or remove icons without trial and error. Yahoo!
If you’re not invested in Amazon’s ecosystem, the interface may feel more like a storefront than a neutral platform, with Prime Video content given prominent placement over other services.
The Bottom Line
For a scant $50 (and frequently on sale for less), you’re essentially giving any TV with an HDMI port a modern streaming brain. Kotaku The AI search is a genuine step forward, the 4K picture quality is excellent, Wi-Fi 6 handles busy households well, and the free content library is deeper than most people realize. If you’re a Prime member, the value is hard to argue with. If you’re not, it’s still one of the best streaming sticks on the market — just go in knowing the home screen is built with Amazon’s interests in mind as much as yours.
